Secret Courts - Liberty
« on: September 26, 2012, 07:32:34 PM »
Last night saw a significant victory for open justice as Liberal Democrat members defied the party leadership on the Justice and Security Bill [1].

Delegates overwhelmingly passed Jo Shaw?s motion [2] against plans for secret courts, and rejected a wrecking amendment put forward by the leadership. The Liberal Democrat party is now formally and officially opposed to Part 2 of the Bill. This is a hugely significant development for Liberty's For Their Eyes Only campaign [3].

This victory comes after Liberty?s packed fringe event at the conference on Monday night [4]. Liberty staff and volunteers were also busy flyering delegates to vote for the motion and against the amendment, making sure everyone was aware of the significance for open justice and the rule of law. And Liberty's Director called publicly for delegates to support the motion [5].

Liberty employed ?clean graffiti? around the conference in Brighton

We now have a huge amount of work to do in the months ahead to build on this success. The Bill is expected to return to the House of Lords in October and Liberty will be lobbying, campaigning in the media and bringing together a common sense consensus against these disastrous proposals. We will continue our strong presence at party conferences with our upcoming Labour and Conservative fringe events.

We want to kill this odious bill once and for all, and to do this we need your help. Please consider making a donation to keep the campaign going. There is also still time to write to your MP asking them to oppose the Justice and Security Bill (and let us know what they say!). You can find plenty of information in the links below.
Thank you so much for your support.
