Today we are bombarded with advertising for the latest packaged cereal and must-have desserts. We drive to the local takeaway joint and order fast food as if it was the natural thing to do. We have processed breads and packaged cereals for breakfast, artificial flavours and additives for lunch, and frozen meals for dinner full of sugar and salt.

And we have become conditioned to think that this is normal. Next time you go to your supermarket, stop and look at the layout. 90% of the food available in the aisles is highly processed - in cans, packets, boxes, jars. As little as 10% is fresh REAL food such as fruit and vegetables. When did eating become a science experiment full of chemicals you can't even recognise let alone pronounce?

No wonder the rate of cancer is increasing at an alarming rate. Truth is we don't exactly know the main causes are, that we will probably learn in the next decade when it is too late. But what we can do now is make the best food choices possible. By maintaining an alkaline body we are halfway towards good health and longevity.

Sugar Has a Lot to Answer For

In the 1980s, dieticians decided that fat was evil and the infamous diet range of products was born. Diet yogurt, diet soft drinks and a plethora of products carrying the "diet" or "light" label. This fooled the general public into thinking they would consume fewer calories that the original versions, but what was really happening was the products were laden with sugar to increase taste and replace the fat.



Carbs are what makes you fat, fat does not make you fat. Why? Because the liver can only process so many sugars and the remainder must be stored in the safe fat cells - thus the increase in weight. These hidden sugars introduced in 1908s were like stealth ninjas, attacking our systems and messing with our metabolism. The Research shows the obesity rate spikes at an alarming rate from 1980 onwards.

Sugar is also a very addictive substance. Likened to cocaine, it changes hunger hormones so quickly that unconscious eating becomes the norm. Once you have processed sugars in your system, the body will automatically crave processed carbohydrates. And unfortunately cancer cells thrive on sugar, in fact cancer cells with wither in a purely alkaline body. Remove the sugar, and the cancer struggles to grow. You may be starting to realise the link between eating processed foods and illness.

You Are What You Eat

Have you ever eaten a lot of chocolate or sweets and suddenly become cranky and irritated? Or eaten too much starchy carbs such as bread and felt like you needed a snooze? Sugars require the body's metabolism to work hard and quickly affects our hydration levels and endocrine functionality.

The Industrial Age had a lot to answer for. The introduction of factories and food processing plants seemed such a convenience at the time but in reality has set us up for disease and illness. Going back to a hunter gatherer's style of eating is paramount to health and to reclaiming your energy. Not only does processed food invite in illness but it also leaves you feeling lethargic and unmotivated.

Lemon Water

A very simple trick to alkalize your body is to have a large glass of warm water every morning on rising, with half a fresh lemon squeezed in it. Yes the lemon is the most acidic fruit but it becomes pure alkaline once ingested. This sets your body up for a health pH balance for the day. Your body's systems like to operate a t a happy 7.2 on the pH scale. You will fall into acidity under 7.0 if you are eating too much animal meat, dairy, processed foods, sugars, coffee and alcohol and even if you are experiencing high life stress and releasing too much of the stress hormone cortisol into your body.



Up Your Greens

The most effective way to alkalize your body is to up your intake of leafy greens such as kale, spinach, celery, cucumber and herbs. Green vegetables are high on the alkalinity scale and or course are unprocessed in their natural state. Eating a high quantity of greens daily can be difficult, and if you don't own a juicer or are time poor, consider finding a natural greens powder to supplement by mixing it into a daily greens drink. This ensures your cells are flooded with nutrients, which naturally curbs cravings for sugars, and increases your immune system.

So in summary, anyone can take steps to correcting an acidic body. Firstly, reduce your intake of processed foods. Secondly, add a warm lemon water drink each morning. Thirdly, increase the percentage of leafy greens in your diet on a daily basis.
