As Scotland Yard deals with nearly 300 allegations of sex abuse carried out by Jimmy Savile, UTV has uncovered archive footage of a rare interview with the late presenter - in which he talked candidly about rumours that were rife.

Gerry Kelly reaction

Just six years ago, when Savile was about to turn 80, he agreed to appear on the Gerry Kelly Meets ... show and the interview was filmed at one of his luxurious homes in Leeds.

Rumours about the eccentric, tracksuit-wearing, cigar-smoking personality had long been tabloid fodder and Gerry Kelly did question Savile during the course of the interview about children.

"I think all children should be eaten at birth," Savile declared, when asked if he would have liked to have had any of his own.

I'm not a child person ... I don't do under-age sex.

Surprised at his response, Gerry commented: "And yet for years, you did Jim'll Fix It and you loved those children ..."

Savile quickly cut him off.

"I never loved them at all. I respected them and they respected me," he said.

"They knew that I wasn't some yucky adult that'd say: 'My my, don't you look smart today?' I don't talk like that to kids ...

"They respected me enormously, I respected them enormously - but I wasn't yucky to them or anything like that."

Gerry later asked Savile specifically about the rumours printed by tabloid newspapers, only for Savile to deny - without prompting - that he was a paeodophile.

"Any tabloid journalist will tell you two things. One: I'm very boring. Two: I don't do drugs, I don't do underage sex or any of them things that you read in the papers today," Savile said.

"But they still like coming round to talk to me, 'cause they know that I'll give them an angle they've maybe never had before ..."

He added: "I don't have an Internet, I don't have a computer, I don't know what an email is. I don't know anything about that world ...

"All these odd things that you're talking about (the rumours) ... Hey, all you can expect from a pig is a grunt. That's it. Doesn't bother me in the slightest."

The coming weeks hopefully will be a stark warning to any men out there today who think they can exploit their positions of power and influence and abuse children.

Commander Peter Spindler, Scotland Yard

Speaking about that interview, Gerry Kelly said he found Savile to be "very odd" - but had to take him at his word.

"I thought he was being truthful, I have to say," Gerry said.

"It would be clever of me to say: 'Yeah, there was something there.' But honestly, we walked away not liking the man. Nobody liked him - no one in the crew liked him.

"But that's all. We didn't go away thinking he lied through his teeth from start to finish.

"We took him at his word, as everybody did at the time. We had no reason, other than what was written on the Internet, to disbelieve him.

"I was sitting as close to him as I am to you, face-to-face, and he was saying he didn't do these things. I could hardly call him a liar, could I?"

The full extent of the scandal surrounding Savile began to emerge following an ITV Exposure documentary three weeks ago.

A shelved BBC Newsnight investigation into the sex abuse claims - some of which are alleged to have taken place on BBC premises - has since also been investigated by BBC Panorama.

Scotland Yard Commander Peter Spindler has now said Savile was "undoubtedly" one of the most prolific sex offenders he had come across.

"Within London, we have trebled the number of historic abuse allegations," he said.

"I have no doubt that we're in a watershed moment for child abuse investigation, and Operation Yewtree will be a landmark investigation."

Savile died last year at the age of 84, but criminal proceedings could yet be brought against others who are still alive and have been named in allegations.

Scotland Yard officers are said to be "preparing an arrest strategy", but no one has yet been arrested or interviewed under caution.
