An excellent letter in today's Telegraph.
SIR – It is time for clarity and honesty over Brexit.
In June 2016 the country voted to leave the EU; this was not an advisory vote, as some now suggest. It was clearly stated at the time that the result would be implemented. Accordingly, Parliament voted to invoke Article 50, and enacted legislation to the effect that we shall leave on March 29 this year. So much is not in dispute.
If we were not to leave the EU on that date, it would be an outrageous denial of democracy – and, as matters stand now, illegal.
The Withdrawal Deal currently being debated in the House of Commons purports to take us out, but effectively leaves us in. The pretence that it is a good deal which implements the referendum result is, frankly, dishonest. There is nothing else on offer; any further attempt at negotiation would clearly be futile.
Since we cannot leave the EU on March 29 with a deal, we must leave without one. There is no other option, and any MP who cannot see that and accept it (even if reluctantly) has no right to retain his or her seat.
